Our soul waits for the Lord; he is our help and our shield.
For our heart is glad in him, because we trust in his holy name.
Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us, even as we hope in you.
– Psalm 33:2022

There was a time in history before airplanes and bombs, before computer guided missiles and chemical warfare. There was a time when a shield was a crucial part of a warrior’s equipment. Shields came in a variety of different sizes and were made from an assortment of different materials. They were designed to protect the holder from incoming spears or arrows that came from a distance as well as from swords, daggers, and other close range attacks. Without a shield, a warrior would be vulnerable to attacks, injuries and even death. Soldiers today still need protection from attacks. Instead of a handheld shield, modern technology has developed fullbody armor in an attempt to shield soldiers against injury.

In Psalm 33 we read that the Lord is our help and our shield. God has promised to be with his people and protect them fromSatan’s attacks. He has promised to be with you to the end of time. No matter the battles you are forced to fight, you can find safety and eternal security under the protection of his love.

Why would God, the supreme creator of the universe, be concerned with the protection of one individual person? Why would he care about you? The psalmist answers that too.

Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us

Love. God chose to create us out of his love. That love caused him to send a shield to save us from the arrows and sword blows of sin and death that plague this earthly life. In his love he sent the only shield that could offer eternal protection. He sent his only son to take the full brunt of the punishment for our sin. Jesus is our shield.

Know with certainty that you are loved and protected by the most powerful force imaginable. You can trust his promises of love without fail. You can point others to his shield of love and invite them to live under its protection as well. Satan will battle against you with weapons of sin, sickness, and death, but nothing is stronger than your shield. Nothing is stronger than the shield of Christ.
