And he will swallow up on this mountain the covering that is cast over all peoples, the veil that is spread over all nations. He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the Lord has spoken. Isaiah 25:7-8
This passage from Isaiah is part of the Old Testament reading for Easter Sunday. As we prepare for the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, we contemplate the net of sin that ensnares all people, eventually dragging us all down to death. No nation, no people, no one can escape it.
But God promises to completely swallow up sin and death forever. Our Lord God promises to wipe away his children’s tears, and that is precisely what He does on Easter! In His resurrection, Jesus completely swallows up sin and death forever. Sin and death have no final hold on those who believe in Him. All reproach is turned aside and removed from us.
As Psalm 23 says, now we walk through the valley of the shadow of death. But we are not alone in this walk, for Jesus and His promise remain with us. We see Jesus’ suffering and death starkly during this Holy Week. Because he suffered for us, we know we are not alone. Christ is the one who will take us from the valley of the shadow of death to the mountain where God himself has prepared a rich banquet for us.
His promises of forgiveness, salvation, and eternal life are sure and certain. We can be sure of this because He, the Lord God Almighty, tells us so.
Lord of Life, teach us to live each day in the joy and gladness of knowing that because Jesus lives, we shall live too. Amen.
